Designs That Will Give Your Home a Rustic Remodel

Rustic design and architecture has become very trendy over the last couple of years. The word “rustic” has even become somewhat of a buzzword in describing interior home designs. Rustic doesn’t necessarily have to mean log cabins and full country living. It can be something more subtle and contemporary that emphasizes more natural aesthetics, unique styles and craftsmanship. Going rustic is a shift from mass-produced, cookie-cutter interiors to home designs that infuse unique touches into your home. These remodeling projects will also give your living space that homey comfort feeling that you never knew was missing.

Gable Front Entrances

These peaked entryways are sure to improve the face of your home. Their height makes the home feel both larger and more welcoming from the outside. Not only will gable-front entrances make your home more pronounced and give you an added aesthetic, but they can also be effective in protecting the front of your home from weather and providing quaint porch seating areas. The gable front can be both traditional and rustic. The traditional style is usually done with white pillars and shingles for the roofing while more rustic ones, like the one pictured, use wooden supports and metal roofing. Aluminum and copper have become very popular metals for rustic-style roofing due to their durability and bold look that makes your home more charming to those who pass by.

Repurposed wood

The use of wood is paramount in rustic home remodeling projects. It is the main theme that brings that natural element into the home and also gives that sense of warmth found in rustic interiors.

However, we’re not talking about glossy hardwood finishes. An eco-friendly and affordable option is recycled or reclaimed wood. These woods are popular in rustic-themed remodels not only because they are eco-friendly but they also deliver that more rugged and un-polished look that homeowners are looking for when going rustic. They also cost significantly less. Reclaimed pine, cedar and spruce woods are commonly used for wood paneling, exposed beams, furniture and cabinetry and provide bold and elegant looks while helping keep your renovations within budget.

Exposed Stone

Although wood is the primary focus in many rustic remodeling projects, stone is probably the second most used element in giving homes a rustic interior. They also provide a different texture that breaks up a room and makes it stand apart from other areas of your home. Stones come in a variety of styles and patterns. The two main types of stonework include rubble masonry and ashlar masonary. Rubble masonry consists of irregular, non-uniformly shaped rocks while ashlar masonry provides a more uniform look as it uses square and rectangular stones that are spaced an equal distance apart. Within these two groups are a variety of styles of stonework such as colonial wall stone, fieldstone, veneer stone, river rock stone walls and French chateau style walls.

The plethora of options helps to suit the different tastes of homeowners and can be used as backgrounds for fireplaces and T.V’s, bringing warmth in common family gathering places.

Exposed Wood Beam Ceilings

The wood beam ceiling has become a trademark of modern rustic style and design. Wood beams not only give the home more height and open up rooms but they greatly boost the aesthetic value of the house. For these exposed ceilings, homeowners can use standards beam or trusses (pictured below) for a more complex design.

Sliding Barn Doors

Sliding barn doors are great partitions that showcase the craftsmanship and uniqueness that you’re trying to capture by doing rustic themed renovations on the inside of your home. These are also welcoming entryways that open up a room and make the home feel more intimate and not as closed off. You can also get creative with the look of your barn doors and have more design options than traditional doors in the interior of your home.

Open- Fireplaces

Most people have them, but fireplaces are key rustic centerpieces in your home that can often be forgotten. They are best used for common gathering areas but they can be rather underutilized parts of your home depending upon where they are placed. Putting the fireplace in open and popular areas introduces an added literal and figurative warmth to the heart of your home. Implementing a two-sided fireplace, like the one pictured below, will spread warmth and a rustic visual by making it accessible from multiple rooms. Pairing fireplaces with wood beams and stone surroundings will only further enhance their rustic appeal.

Choosing the Right Tones on the Interior

The color profile for rustic homes usually sticks to more natural, earthy colors. Greens, Browns and tans are common earthy colors that all cater to creating a warmer environment. Darker tones and accents will also create that relaxed and homey atmosphere that rustic-minded homeowners are going for. When designing a rustic interior, always favor warmth over colder gray and whites. Try to aim for being more natural and less bold in your interior designs.
