How to Choose the Right Multi-Generational Space for Your Family

How to Choose the Right Multi-Generational Space for Your Family - Image 1

Multi-generational living refers to two or more adult generations of a family living together. Typically, this means grandparents living with their adult children and grandchildren. With the rising costs of assisted living communities, childcare assistance, and an overall convenience to having everyone in one place, in-law suites are becoming increasingly popular home projects. Here are some of the things we recommend discussing before you start your design:

Accessibility

Does your family member currently have mobility limitations or is this something you want to plan for in the future? Features like grab bars, ramps, larger hallways, wider doorways, curbless showers and benches in the shower will help to make the suite more comfortable and safer.

Privacy

In our many years of designing multi-generational spaces, we have seen a varying need for privacy among clients. Sometimes an additional bedroom and bathroom on the first floor is all that is required. Other family members prefer to have their own kitchen, laundry room, private entrance and more. Determining the degree of private living is important to come to an agreement on as we want everyone to feel comfortable in their home- the original owners and the ones moving in.

Outdoor Space

Will your family member want a front porch to drink coffee on in the morning or want a screened porch to protect them from insects? Do you envision a communal patio area to connect the back of your home to the back of the in-law suite? All these options are a way to increase the footprint of your multi-generational space and make your family member feel like they have space to breathe.

Bonus Rooms

Some clients are nervous about leaving their own spacious home for a much smaller suite. A bonus room that can also function as a guest room is a wonderful solution to this concern. It can be a secondary tv room, library or hobby room that has a pull-out couch, murphy bed or can accommodate a permanent bed. This creates additional space and separation for the occupants of the suite as well so they do not feel like they are on top of one another.
