Family moving into their grandparent's home wanted to update the living space for their growing family and take care of their grandmother. Living close to the wilderness, the family agreed on customizing their bathroom into a cozy modern style utilizing wooden floors and for one section of the wall were the mirrors & sinks are placed.
A dark wooden floor and wall was picked out contrast well with the greenery outside the windows. The windows picked out were placed high to allow in lighting without taking away the privacy of the bathroom. The walk-in shower was installed with a 3/8ths thick clear glass shower door with a dead panel and swing door.
The toilet is placed in a separate, smaller room, allowing the use of the bathroom and walk in closet to still be used while maintaining privacy. The bath was installed next to the walk-in shower. and has a good view of the back yard and wood's line.
The cool dark tones work well in contrasting the sinks, lighting, and bath. The natural lighting and greenery from outside make the bathroom a cozy area of the home and features a full walk-in closet. The transformation for the growing family found that Starcom could remodel their bathroom for years to come.

An In-Law Suite was necessary to accommodate the expanding family that would be moving in within 4-months.
Starcom Design Build would construct a 1200 sq foot addition to the existing home. 200 sq foot screened porch was also added to the back of the house. The new addition includes a full kitchen, full primary bath on the first floor and a full guest bath on the second floor, a study on the second floor, a primary bedroom and walk in closet on the first floor, a laundry room in the hallway, and an open front porch. The materials used were to match the home's aesthetics. The home's layout was simple to accommodate for the elderly parents that were moving in. All materials were up-to-date and installed to perfection.
The end result is a beautiful and cohesive addition that blends well with the original home yet is an independent and private space. The finish project underwent a few small touches, but the end result was a sizable, useful, and beautiful in-law suite.

The owners of this beautiful home based in Highland, Maryland called us to help them with some problems they were having. The stucco had failed in many places. Leaving the structural sheathing exposed. The tutor trim on the house was rotting. The last inconvenience to rectify; they seldom used their side porch and their adjoining office space was too small.
The stucco replacement cost was more than the clients wanted to invest in their home. The experts at Starcom design Build recommended several hardie Plank products used in conjunction with PVC tutoring. This offered a substantial reduction in maintenance as well as retaining the stately look of there home.
Another great recommendation was made by the Starcom team; we installed 3 ¾ Dow Styrofoam board insulation to boost the home efficiency! This made the home less costly to heat and cool, just as important; the home was more comfortable.
Back in 2006, we remodeled a bathroom for this customer. They yearned for a large, open kitchen and great room. Our Design included knocking out two walls to open the area up between the existing rooms. By doing this, it also enabled us to install a dry bar against an existing wall that backs up to the kitchen. We extended the granite countertops into the great room from the kitchen and this blends the two rooms.
We removed a backdoor and installed a Pella designer patio slider to open up the rooms .
One wall in the old kitchen was wasted space , our designer decided that by installing a desk area, cabinets and floor to ceiling bookcase, he would solve that problem.
To add a focal point between the two rooms, we installed a narrow, tiled wall.
The homeowners were very tired of their outdated master bathroom. There was a big whirlpool tub that took up a lot of room and rarely was used. The shower stall was ordinary and cramped. The only storage area in the room was under the sink and too small. Our customer stored their towels out in the hall linen closet. Since this was the original bathroom in the 21 year old home, some items were in need of repair. Instead of investing more money into this room in which they weren’t happy, they decided to remodel and get the bathroom of their dreams.
Our design team worked closely with the homeowner to ensure we would meet their needs, give them top-of-line design, materials and craftsmanship, and stay within their budget.
The finished result is gorgeous and blends beautifully with the existing home, Trying to utilize the existing space, we built a luxury corner shower. This shower is surrounded by a custom frameless rain-finish enclosure which allows light but allows privacy. The shower pan is island stone- java grey Pebble, which adds character. The shower includes fixed and hand held Hansgrohe showerheads, dual-level corner bench and niches for personal items.
The tot-nexus faucets, in brushed nickel finish, set off the demi backsplash and granite magneta circa countertops finished with bull nose edging. The cherry cabinetry with nutmeg-finish accents this room beautifully. Where the old shower use to stand, is now a full ceiling to floor storage area, so there is no need to run out in the hall to grab a towel.
Our customers are thrilled with the finished product. No more wasted space on unwanted items. A stylish new bathroom which is practical and appealing now adorns their home. She is now thinking of other remodeling projects she would like and we took forward to working together as a team once again.
The homeowners thirty seven year old master bathroom was in due need of a facelift. They were very tired of their small, cramped room with little storage space and outdated fixtures. With three small children, under the age of five, our clients dreamed of one day not having to run up and down the two flights of stairs to do their ever-increasing daily laundry. This was a major priority. Working as a team, we able to achieve these goals.
Our construction quality is top-notch and blends well with the existing home.
In order to make room for a washer and dyer, we had to bump out a wall in the closet. Additional plumbing and electrical had to be installed to handle the addition of these appliances. The washer and dryer had to be moved from the basement to their new location up two flights of stairs.
This project was finished within budget and enhances the real estate value of this lovely room.
The new design of this bathroom makes it more spacious and appealing. The granite countertops and custom cabinets add flare. The new shower area, complete with seating and Moen Show Place dual shower heads are inviting for the clients to relax in at the end of a long day. The glass shower doors open up the corner area of the room. The decorative tile in the shower area, accentuate the tile throughout the room and bring it all together.
Our homeowner is extremely happy with the end result. No more valuable time wasted running up and down stairs to do laundry. The newly remodeled master bathroom is stylish and beautiful and fulfilled their many requirements and wishes
The homeowner was very tired of her small, cramped bathroom. It was the original bath in this 29 year old home. She has a very stressful job and longed for a place she could relax and unwind. She also wanted a new master bedroom suite addition and felt this was the perfect time integrate all the upstairs remodeling at one time.
Our customer had a very clear plan and was very detailed. There were a lot of meetings and planning so that we both shared the same vision.
We worked very closely with the homeowner to have the end results match exactly to what she had envisioned.
The new modern contemporary master bathroom is gorgeous. From the whirlpool tub, decorative tile work, and oversized shower stall complete with seating, our client now has an ‘oasis’ in which she can escape the pressure of her career. The new master bedroom and new master bath compliment each other. To say she was pleased, is an understatement she was so happy with the outcome of her upstairs, she contracted to remodel her living room shortly after.
Our clients were tired of their drab kitchen. They felt the room was very old fashioned. The size of the cooking and dinning area was far too cramped. It was an inadequate workspace with out-dated appliances and very little counter and storage space.
The homeowners had specific ideas on what they needed and wanted. She is a gourmet cook and dreamed of having an updated kitchen to work in. He wanted space to be able to enjoy his morning cup of coffee and read the morning newspaper.
Then newly updated area is now furnished with all the amenities to ensure our customers happiness. Granite countertops, new tile backsplash, diagonal flooring, updated lighting, all add value and beauty.
By removing the soffits, we were able to install ceiling-height wall cabinets with crown molding. Aristokraft select cabinets adorn the walls now and give much needed storage space. A peninsula was conducted which gives her ample counter space and him a perfect spot to enjoy his morning cup of Joe.
We believe the quality of the construction to be exemplary and finished carpentry outstanding. The granite on the interior stair handrails when you enter the home, match the new granite kitchen countertops and draws the renovation together beautifully.
Our clients are elated. Because of our commitment to quality and detail and by working closely together, they now have a stylish and updated kitchen. She even threw a neighborhood party to show off, her newly remodeled kitchen to her friends. As I was leaving, she said
Not all renovations are massive overhauls. Sometimes, adding a few key features to your home can really make all the difference. Take our homeowners in Elkridge, for instance, who came to us for a few additions and upgrades to their kitchen. They were looking to improve the design and function of the space and we were happy to help them take on this project.
One of our top-notch designers, Jerry, is responsible for the design that brought this family's kitchen and family room together. With the addition of built-ins in the kitchen and upgrades to the kitchen pass through, the space has become much more cohesive. The blending of these two spaces really comes together via the kitchen pass through. Perfect for handing out snacks during a super bowl party, or so mom and dad can keep an eye on the kids while they're in the kitchen. The double sided glass cabinetry at the top of the pass through lets through more light and adds a unique design feature to really liven up the whole space. At the end of the day the storage and counter space for this family just about doubled, and they are so thrilled with our work!
This 37 year old master bathroom was in desperate need of a facelift. The homeowners were tired of their small, cramped bathroom, with no storage space and outdated fixtures. A busy family, with three small children under the age of five, our clients also needed a laundry room that was easily accessible. Their current washer and dryer was located all the way in the basement. Which meant they had to schlep their laundry up and down two flights of stairs. Needless to say this was not ideal for a large family of five.
In order to make room for the new washer and dryer upstairs, we had to bump out a wall in the closet. Additional plumbing and electrical had to be installed to handle the addition of the appliances. We also had the task of moving their existing washer and dryer up two flights of stairs for install.
In the master bathroom we gave them granite countertops and custom cabinetry. The new shower area was completed with Moen Show Place dual shower heads and seating. Combined to make a relaxing area where the homeowners could come after a long day. The glass shower doors open up the corner area of the room. The decorative tile in the shower area accentuate the colors throughout, and really bring the design together.
=Our clients were extremely pleased with the results of this renovation. Not only were they able to transform their home into a functional space, they also added value to their home. Our construction quality, as always, is top-notch and blends well into the existing home.
This large home was purchased with the intention of bringing an entire family together again. After living in Florida for a number of years our clients returned back to their roots in Maryland. They purchased a home large enough to accommodate their grown kids and their grandchildren too!
Settled on almost four acres of land, this massive property needed an added in-law suite to lodge overnight guests, including their kids and grandkids. Our designers and builders came up with a beautiful design plan for a new addition onto this home. Topped with Certain Teed Shingles, trimmed with dental molding, this brick and Hardie Plank addition blends seamlessly with the existing exterior of the home. BF Rich windows and sliders allowed ample natural light to flow into the space. An Azek composite deck with stairs offers easy access to the backyard, which is complete with a pool.
The open kitchen and family room truly became the heart of this home. In the kitchen, gorgeous Norcraft Copenhagen Maple cabinetry, stylish granite countertops, and Belleavinita tile backsplash are stunning design features. In the family room two niches (each 30” wide) were custom built onto either side of the gas fireplace. These are the perfect place to display pictures and important mementos. The built ins add charm and distinction, and are a neat alternative to the traditional fireplace mantle. Armstrong laminate flooring, in white wash walnut, unifies the two rooms.
The master bathroom and powder room both have Norcraft vanities, topped with granite counter and under-mounted sinks. In the master bath American Olean tile and a strip of Marazzi Crystal Stone were used. The niche, grab bar, and corner seat, inside the shower, are practical as well as stylish. Moen and Kohler products were used throughout the bathroom designs.
This new in-law suite was the perfect addition for this family to finally reunite under the same roof. There is also no longer a concern about storage because there have been so many incorporated into the design. There's even a separate entrance in the front of the house, to the side of the front door! From the walk-in bedroom closet, cabinetry, attic, and basement, there is so much space that the homeowners have to used.
In the end, everything came together beautifully! From our exemplary construction to our attention to detail, the addition was finished with amazing results. We stayed within budget, and significantly increased the value of the property. We were tight on our timeline because of the winter weather conditions causing a few delays along the way. Our team was also communicating with the homeowners who were still living five states away at the time of the construction. But by the time they arrived in Maryland, their home was move-in ready and they didn’t have to lift a finger to do anything except enjoy their new home.
They are thrilled to be back home and close to their family once again!
This family wanted to complete some renovations and updates to their home in Dayton, Maryland. With the input of the homeowners our design team came up with an exceptional plan that completely changed the interior of the house. Inside we kept the existing fixtures, ceramic flooring and the door. We reframed and installed a wider door to match the existing one.
In the bathrooms we installed a new toilet, hand shower and shower valve. We altered the existing vanity plumbing to accommodate the new Pedestal. New Pre-fab Swanstone shower pan and custom tiled shower gave the bathroom a stylish modern update. The family was keen on using high end products to complete their bathroom, including sleek new Kohler fixtures. Inside the shower we included a niche for shampoos and soaps, an added element of function in the new bathroom.
Other accessories we included was a medicine cabinet, towel bars, robe hooks, and grab bars, for added safety.
In the family room, we removed an existing doorway, and built a ramp from the kitchen level to the family room, in order to keep the space from remaining choppy. We built a screen porch off the rear of the home, with vaulted ceilings and cedar posts. Off the porch we also built a rear deck that wraps around the screen porch, sunroom, and open deck. Inside the sunroom we installed Dulcevita, Chianti, and Tuscasnt tile flooring.
We also removed the double hung windows in the kitchen bay and install them on the rear of the new basement.
Our exceptional design and commitment to happy clients, left this family feeling elated about the outcome of their home renovation. They are so excited to reach out to us when the begin planning their next project.
Our clients came to us with a kitchen that was cramped, choppy, outdated, and overall drab. They wanted to open up the kitchen area without compromising on space and storage. Transforming the space into open concept so that they could see their children playing in the next room, joining the family spaces together.
One of the challenges with renovating in a home that is 32-years-old is dealing with pre-existing ductwork. We relocated the HVAC lines and removed some of the existing walls surrounding the kitchen to open it up to the living room. New granite countertops made clean up easy, and was a great design element for this outdate kitchen. A custom eye-catching backsplash flowed with the rest of the design and accentuated the gold flecks in the countertops. A large center island, with pendant lighting, created a space big enough to prepare meals, and with the addition of a few chairs also was a space for eating. Rosewood hardwood flooring replaced the previous hardwood floors that were buckling, and tied the whole space together. Perfect for a busy family with young children running about.
This kitchen was impeccably designed and executed by our team, and the homeowners are over the moon! There is so much storage and counter space, and the whole main level feels so much more open. Our clients really wanted brand-name products installed and we were happy to oblige, all staying within budget. They now have a design that is warm, inviting, stylish, and perfectly practical for this busy young family.
Our clients came back to us because they were so pleased with the exceptional quality of work that we did for them on their previous two home remodeling projects. Their home is tucked back in one of the older Columbia neighborhoods, on a quiet street with several other family homes. We had previously completed work on their bathroom and basement, and they came to us (again) wanting to create a master suite addition off the back of their home.
The addition is going to be built off of the main level so that the couple can avoid tracking up and down the stairs several times a day. Main level living is optimal for older couples because it means they have access to everything on one floor of the house.
Their house is backed onto a small wooded area with lots of trees and lush greenery. Once the addition is complete the couple will be able to wake up in the morning to stunning views of their backyard and feel completely serene looking out of the window.
So far we are in the stages of pouring the cement for the foundation and we have begun work on the framing. As we continue to build we are keeping many of the couples ideas for the design and decoration, in their new master retreat, at the forefront. They have picked high end finishing’s including luxurious tiles and the bathroom and hardwood cabinetry for storage. No doubt, the end result of this remodel will be a beautifully finished master suite where they can spend their time relaxing. They can add this project to the list of other Starcom projects around their home that they love!
Finding the time to update your home can be tricky with a busy career and five children to raise. Our clients over in Ellicott City came to us looking to create an oasis where they could come to unwind from a hectic day but also catered to their fast paced lives. Their current bathroom was outdated and neglected, not the kind of a place a busy couple could go for rejuvenation.
A custom shower was built for the couple replacing the small shower and sunken whirlpool tub. A neo-angle, oversized shower gives ample room for bathing. The Florida tiled shower is offset with two knee walls, recessed niches, decorative tile, dual shower heads, and a double hung window with obscured glass. Combining beauty and comfort for this couples master bathroom.
Palette rectangle under-mount sinks surrounded by Quartz countertops were installed for the two separate vanities. Wolf Designer Sullivan cabinetry with soft-close drawers give ample storage space. The cabinets, painted white with black glaze finish, contrast the deep "Ravens purple" walls.
The outcome, a modern and contemporary bathroom infused with practical design elements to fit this couple on the go. Creating a stylish paradise where they can escape at the end of the day was exactly what they needed, and they are thrilled with the results.
The Johnson's were tired of their kitchen being completely separate from their family room. It left the chef alienated from the rest of the party. The Johnson's came to Starcom Design Build to see what could be done. After inspecting their home, we found out that the walls were not load-bearing and could easily be removed. We installed cabinets to the ceiling to maximize storage and a large center island to connect the two spaces.
The Johnson's are very pleased with their remodeled layout. Mrs. Johnson is so happy she can be a part of the conversation while cooking her famous dishes.
Our clients have lived in their Columbia home since 1993. Recently, they decided it was time for an addition that would bring a new energy to their home and allow them to be immersed in the scenic views of their shady backyard. Our homeowners wanted a screened in surrounding that would allow their family to have an inviting, open area for dining and entertaining company without being bothered by bugs and harsh, direct sunlight. Their goal going into the project was to add a maintenance free addition to the back of their home that looked like it was a part of the original house.
Our team made the new porch transition seamlessly with the rest of the home by installing a double doorway that allowed access into the porch area from the back of the client’s home. The porch was designed and measured into place so that it would perfectly meet pavement that wrapped around the right side of their home and a small gardening area on the left. The porch was constructed with white, composite decking material and identical roofing shingles that matched the original part of the home. Dark gray Fiberon Good Life composite decking board was used for the flooring. This material is made to look like wood and it provides a smooth and clean flooring look on decks without the hassle and maintenance that comes with caring for wood.
The porch was also designed to maximize the visibility of the backyard for our clients. Our designers implemented wide window spacing with vaulted ceilings for full exposure to the outdoors. All areas were finished off with a thin screening that would allow for full visibility and no obstruction. Black balusters supported a railing that went around the entire porch to give an added element to the screened-in look. Additionally, the design team outfitted an unscreened grilling area on the side of the porch, making the new home addition ideal for summer evening cookouts. Inside the screening is a spacious room with seats and benches for dining or just to sit around and host company.
The porch was finished with a wooden, barn-style ceiling, four skylights, a porch fan and four ceiling lights. The skylights will bring lots of natural light into the seating area without it being too blinding and will balance the lounging area nicely with the shade that comes with having a screened in porch
There were some structural issues in building the porch as this was a new addition to the client’s home which caused some initial delays. From there, the project took off and our clients couldn’t be happier with the end result. Our creative designs and attention to the client’s needs helped create a porch that provides a place for family to get together and experience the views of their backyard while also keeping the addition low maintenance and identical to the original look of the home.
Our client’s home in Ellicott City was built in the 1980s. The guest bathroom had not been updated since the house was built. The homeowners enjoy hosting guests, so having an updated bathroom is a priority. It featured outdated oak cabinets, a cream colored bath/shower insert, and cultured marble countertops. Because the homeowners stated that the bathtub was not being used, it was taken out and replaced by a spa-like shower. Removing the bathtub provided enough space to add a granite shower seat. The shower was waterproofed using Schluter-Kerdi Board to reduce the risk of mold and mildew. Schluter-Kerdi Board is an innovative waterproof membrane that is placed directly beneath the tile. The shower head, drawer knobs, and sink faucet were updated to a brushed nickel. The cultured marble countertops were updated to Lennon granite with an undermount sink. To brighten the space, the old cabinets were replaced with light grey, soft-close cabinets. Bathroom tiles that look like wood were put in on the floor. Using faux-wood tiles bring a natural, cozy element into the bathroom without the risk of warping due to moisture.
Our client’s kitchen, in Jessup, was small, cramped, outdated, and a very difficult space to be able to cook properly. Along with their kitchen, their fireplace area was just something that took up space in the room and wasn’t an area where people could comfortably sit around and relax.
Their old carpet was replaced with beautiful wood flooring. The bulk heads and the cabinets blocking the sight line were removed. Wolf Designer Series wall and base white cabinets were installed in their place. They come with full extension glides with dove tail drawer boxes and soft close glides. New granite countertops, with a grey subway tile backsplash, were installed in place of their old laminate countertops. A brand new side bar was also added with the same lavish countertops and cabinets to add a nice area to prepare drinks.
The peninsula doubled in size and offers two sides of large storage. The homeowners previously had old fluorescent ceiling light fixtures. The new kitchen features recessed lighting throughout and a tray ceiling for additional depth.
Our client’s old fireplace work area was turned into a beautiful and comfortable relaxation area. Shelves were installed to display decorations around the hearth. Two couches and a chair fit comfortably in the room to be able to sit back watch movies and shows on their TV.
At the end, their goals were met and exceeded; the family now has a modernized kitchen where they can cook their meals properly and a cozy room to kick back and relax in front of the fire place after a long day.
Previous Northern Virginia residents decided they wanted their parents to move into their new home in Ellicott City, MD. The only available area for the parents to live in was the dark basement. The parents did not have their own kitchenette, an ADA friendly bathroom or a separate laundry room. This common scenario can be a tough transition for older parents who are often leaving their own spacious homes behind. They desired an independent area with the amenities they required but wanted to still be included in the home. Our clients came to us with their challenge and Starcom was happy to help!
An 800 square foot rear addition was designed to blend with the style of the existing home. The style of windows, color and type of siding, and roofing is all identical to the original. A kitchen including a full size refrigerator, range and sink as well as an island with seating, serves as the entertaining and dining space for guests. Off of the kitchen, there is an oversized laundry room that can also be used for sewing or various hobbies. The bathroom features dual sinks, plenty of countertop space, grab bars and a zero threshold shower. This important feature decreases falls with aging users and also makes the shower accessible by wheelchair. Finally, a walk-in closet and bedroom with large windows to overlook the beautiful and lush backyard.
There is no doubt the homeowners and their parents can now live harmoniously together.
Starcom Design/Build was approached by the charity, Tunnel to Towers, to build an addition on a 1920’s farmhouse in Ellicott City. Navy Commander Tan was extremely limited in his home due to mobility constraints. Prior to our start, he was using a small room on the first floor as his bedroom and an existing bathroom that was not ADA compliant. This made simple tasks very difficult.
Starcom needed to design and build an addition that had adequate space for Commander Tan to move around, a bathroom that had plenty of grab bars, a zero-threshold shower, access from the suite to the main family room, a workstation, an exterior entrance, and smart amenities.
The addition was built on the front side of the home with matching siding and stonework to blend seamlessly with the existing home. It was very important to Starcom and to the client that the new addition look intentional in design and materials.
The spacious curbless shower features 2 double niches, 3 grab bars, a bench and a handheld shower faucet that can be utilized while sitting down. The vanity height is comfortable for a chair user and includes a motion detection sink faucet. The state-of-the-art commode is operable by smart phone or the buttons placed conveniently on the wall. Heated tile floors are a luxurious touch and also keep the homeowner warm in the winter months.
Off of the bedroom, there is a walk-in closet complete with a wide pocket door, just for Teddy. A custom L shape desk made of Typhoon Bordeaux Granite yields a great amount of space for Commander Tan to work and keeps him nearby his personalized bathroom. An easy access button on the side of the desk opens a self-propelled exterior door. This leads to a wraparound porch for the whole family to enjoy the outdoors and a ramp that makes it easy for Commander Tan to access his vehicle to take his two kids to school.
It was an absolute pleasure to build this addition for Commander Tan and his family. A hero for our country and one of the kindest people we have ever met. We wish the Tan Family all the very best… Welcome Home!
